Here's what current students have to say:

Who am I?
Hi there, I'm Jon, a 28 year old full-time musician based in Addlestone. I created White Noise around 7 years ago when I noticed a lack of serious, professional guitar tuition in my area, especially for grown-ups! I think that students who are really serious about learning deserve a teacher who is equally committed to their success.
I work out bespoke goals and lesson plans with every student, so every week is fun and challenging. This way I can guarantee that if you put in the practice you will succeed.
Frequently Asked Questions
I certainly don’t claim to know everything, I still learn new things every time I pick up the guitar. That said, I’ve managed to pack in 19 years of experience including being in a classical guitar ensemble, a jazz big band, an acoustic double act playing the Canterbury and later London pub circuit, and now a gigging rock band with some truly awesome musicians.
Nowdays I compose my own music for orchestra for fun. You might be listening to it now if you clicked the Soundcloud button at the top of this page.
On top of 7 years of tutoring guitar professionally, I worked as a teaching assistant in schools around Kent for 3 years, teaching hundreds of students from year ones to adult learners. I’m currently working in a local school doing guitar and piano lessons one day a week.
I teach Electric, Acoustic and Classical (Nylon string) guitar at all levels. I can tutor you in music theory, composition, songwriting and production. I also teach ukulele, mainly for younger learners, piano and bass guitar.
I teach one-to-one, for 60 minute lesson slots weekly. Although I do teach lessons from my little home studio in Addlestone, these are rarely available and in high demand. I’d encourage any learner to consider online lessons over Zoom. The benefits are enormous – no travel time or lateness, no paper worksheets and homework, no waiting in the car or living room for parents!
Kids seem to love it too. Several students who helped me test this idea out a few years back still ask when they can have another online lesson because they enjoyed it so much!
Although I used to travel all around Surrey to give lessons, as my schedule has filled up with local students I can no longer justify the travel and set up time. In-real-life lessons now happen on select evenings and weekends at my home studio in Addlestone, where I have teaching resources to hand and top of the line equipment set up ready. We do have off-street parking though!
This depends on you and what you want. Currently I have some younger students working their way through ABRSM classical guitar grades, and some doing Rock School electric or acoustic grades. These syllabuses provide certificates and recognition of the students’ achievements and are especially good for kids.
However if you are an adult learner or a teen with a clear musical direction or goal in mind, it may well be better for you to take your own path, learning what’s most relevant to you and using songs and artists you really love to learn these lessons. I’ll be happy to plan this with you as we go and I’ll create most of the lesson material myself, perhaps recommending books and other sources to supplement and dive deeper.
Even if you go for the grade exam route, I’ll still use much of my own material to fill in the gaps and make sure you’re learning what you want to learn.
As of writing this, my youngest students are five. One of them is beginning to learn on a ukulele first, as this is guitar-sized to her, and all the skills will transfer easily later on!
My eldest students would rather their age remain undisclosed. However I know they are retired!
Age and size are of little concern in my experience. What’s important is if a child is expressing an interest in learning music it should absolutely be encouraged and nurtured. When they feel really excited about the prospect of playing music, this is the correct time to start.
I teach classical guitar, from Bach all the way to modern pieces. I teach modern genres including pop, all kinds of rock, blues, funk and metal. I teach jazz to a basic level too, but if you’re dead set on being a jazz player you should look for a specialist jazz teacher because that genre has many unique things to learn in depth.
