Here's what current students have to say:

Jon is a fantastic guitar teacher, I’m 46 and never played before but Jon’s way of teaching has been great. As a complete beginner he has given me confidence, and with his patience, friendly and relaxed atmosphere brought me on to a good level of understanding and playing the guitar in a short period of time. Really looking forward to everything he has planned for me in my current and future lessons.

Jon, has a relaxed and friendly approach to guitar lessons which my daughter responds really well to. He is guided by the pupil and tailors lessons to the individual. I would highly recommend.

Have loved my lessons with Jon, very friendly, patient and extremely talanted guy! Caters to what I want to learn and I always leave excited for my next lesson.

Who am I?

Hi there, I'm Jon, a 28 year old full-time musician based in Addlestone. I created White Noise around 7 years ago when I noticed a lack of serious, professional guitar tuition in my area, especially for grown-ups! Most musicians will teach part-time at some point, and while there's absolutely nothing wrong with that, I think that students who are really serious about learning deserve a teacher who is equally committed to their success. I work out bespoke goals and lesson plans with every student, so every week is fun and challenging. This way I can guarantee that if you put in the practice you will succeed.

Frequently Asked Questions

I teach one-to-one, usually for 30 minute or 60 minute lesson slots weekly. Although I do teach lessons from my little home studio in Addlestone, these are rarely available and in high demand. It’s likely that I’ll be teaching you entirely online. The benefits of this are enormous – no travel time or lateness, no paper worksheets and homework, no waiting in the car or living room for parents!

Additionally, if you choose, I can record every lesson and send it to you to revise or take notes from, so you get the maximum value out of every lesson, even if you’re not on your A-game that day.

If you’re a grown-up then online lessons are a no-brainer. Why miss a lesson or have it turn into a much longer commitment because of traffic or weather conditions, when you can have it sorted with a 30 minute video call in your lunch break?

And as for the kids, I find that they actually listen, focus and behave better in a Skype lesson, and they had great fun. In fact, several students who helped me test this idea out a few years back still ask when they can have another online lesson because they enjoyed it so much.

I certainly don’t claim to know everything, I still learn new things every time I pick up the guitar. That said, I’ve managed to pack in 17 years of experience including being in a classical guitar ensemble, a jazz big band, an acoustic double act playing the Canterbury and later London pub circuit, and now a rock band with some truly awesome musicians.

On top of 6 years of tutoring guitar professionally, I worked as a teaching assistant in schools around Kent for 3 years, teaching hundreds of students from year ones to adult learners.

Although I used to travel all around Surrey to give lessons, as my schedule has filled up with local students I can no longer justify the travel and set up time. In-real-life lessons now happen on select evenings and weekends at my home studio in Addlestone, where I have teaching resources to hand and top of the line equipment set up ready.

If you don’t live nearby to Addlestone, that’s one more reason to take online Skype lessons instead!

This depends on you and what you want. Currently I have some younger students working their way through ABRSM classical guitar grades, and some doing Rock School electric or acoustic grades. These syllabuses provide certificates and recognition of the students’ achievements and are especially good for kids.

However if you are an adult learner or a teen with a clear musical direction or goal in mind, it may well be better for you to take your own path, learning what’s most relevant to you and using songs and artists you really love to learn these lessons. I’ll be happy to plan this with you as we go and I’ll create most of the lesson material myself, perhaps recommending books and other sources to supplement and dive deeper.

Even if you go for the grade exam route, I’ll still use much of my own material to fill in the gaps and make sure you’re learning what you want to learn.

As of writing this, my youngest students are five. One of them is beginning to learn on a ukulele first, as this is guitar-sized to her, and all the skills will transfer easily later on!

My eldest students would rather their age remain undisclosed in the public domain. However I know they are retired!

Age and size are of little concern in my experience. What’s important is if a child is expressing an interest in learning music it should absolutely be encouraged and facilitated. When they feel really excited about the prospect of playing music, this is the correct time to start.

I teach Electric, Acoustic and Classical (Nylon string) guitar at all levels. I also teach ukulele, mainly for younger learners. While I can play bass guitar and occasionally do it for fun with my band, this is mainly because 90% of the skills transfer. I recommend you see a dedicated bass teacher for that.

I teach classical guitar, from Bach all the way to modern pieces. I also teach most modern genres, including pop, all kinds of rock, blues, funk and metal. I teach jazz to a good level too, but if you’re dead set on being a jazz player you should look for a dedicated jazz teacher as that genre has many unique things to learn in depth.
